The origin of this nuclear symbol is the university of California. In 1946 people of the radiation lab of this institute designed the symbol.
The symbol represents the active radiation of an atom. The dot in the middle represents the atom itself. The black areas surrounding it represent the radiation. There has been doubt about the yellow background color because it is very loud. The color blue was also considered to replace the yellow. Yellow was chosen because blue doesn’t appear on any other warning sign.
The sign is used in a lot of different designs and variations.
