This symbol stands among others for the Roman god Pluto (god of the underworld) and the planet Pluto (named after the roman god). The symbol can be explained as the initials of it’s predictor Percival Lowell or the first 2 letters of Pluto. Accross each other they form this sign.
Besides the planet and the Roman god, Pluto also represents the metal Plutonium. In Astrology Pluto stands for curiousity, diplomacy en craftiness. The sign is probably designed in the period of the discovery of the planet Pluto in the beginning of the 20th century. Other stories tell that the sign is much older.
